Title: GIFT, THE
The setting is a midwestern farm during the depression. Survival necessitates total family involvement and so a twelve-year-old boy stoically performs barn-yard chores alongside his father. With not enough money to purchase anything, he decides on a different kind of giving. On Christmas Day the boy rises very early; does all the chores and returns to bed. Since it is Christmas, the father does not try too hard to rouse the "sleeping" boy and goes off to do the chores. Surprised and touched at finding all is finished, he returns to the house just in time to hear the children making their way to the Christmas tree. He has received the best present of all.
