This inspiring drama of conscience in conflict with friendship is based on the highly respected play by Jean Anouilh. Thomas a Becket shares a rowdy, youthful friendship with Henry II of England until he is appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. Becket is planted by Henry in the clerical office to protect royal interests in the Church, but under the miter Becket experiences a genuine conversion, which sets him against the King, divides England politically, and results in Becket's murder in Canterbury Cathedral.
