Juan Diego was a simple Aztec Indian who lived in sixteenth-century Mexico in the aftermath of the Spanish conquest. It was to him that the Mother of God appeared on December 9, 1531. She had chosen to show her love and compassion to those whom the world judges poor and lowly. Our Lady of Guadeloupe become the Patroness of Mexico and the entire Western Hemisphere. From the first small shrine, there arose the present-day Basilica, which is visited by thousands of pilgrims yearly.
