Clare lived during the turbulent thirteenth century. It was a time of civil war, violence and strife between the rich and the poor. Clare, together with St. Francis of Asssi, began a penitential movement by her radical adherence to simplicity of life and the peace of God. Clare struggled with the great leaders of the Church to become the first woman to write and have approved, her own form of life for her order, the Poor Ladies of San Damiano. he play is written from historical documentation of Clare's life and transforms the exquisite poetry of her letter and writings into a living presence of the saints.
