Sister Helen Prejean, author of the book Dead Man Walking, an account of her prison ministry to death row inmates, visited Briar Cliff College to speak out against the death penalty. She believes, "We need to draw some lines in the sand and say, 'We're not going to kill and we're not going to imitate people in the worst act of their life,'" she said. "As a society, it's a profound act of despair to say to someone who has killed another human being, 'The only way we know how to do justice is to imitate you and kill you.'" In the death penalty, hate is really "crystallized," according to Sister Prejean, and she said that part of her mission is to instill in everyone the sense that love is a more important force in the world than hate.
