Title: INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF CHRISTIANITY: VIDEO 3: THE AGE OF CHRISTENDOM - 400-1000 A.D., AN
It took three centuries for the church to be accepted by the Roman Empire, but only 100 years for many Christians to beleive the Church could not exist outside this framework. Civil and religious functions merged. But the Empire was very sick. In the East it was to survive another ten centruies but in the West it fell to invaders from the North. Even though they destroyed much of the civilization - cities, roads, commerce - the invaders were surprisingly tolerant of Christianity. In an era of chaos, the Church was the only organized institution. During this era, Christianity became a peasant religion full of poetry of the countryside, with prayers for rain and good harvests. Cults of saints and relics and an eagerness to accepts the miraculous among the common people characterized popular religion. Meanwhile, monks and nuns preserved the scripture by copying them by hand. This video contains two 20 minute sessions.
