This Dictionary represents the first collaborative attempt in English to take stock of the remarkable developments in the church and in theology since the Council, a purpose which determined the structure, authorship, and intended audience of this work. Vatican II drew attention to a "hierarchy of truths" drawn up on the basis of the varying relationships between church doctrines ands "the foundation of the Christian faith." Similarly, the dictionary is contructed around twenty-four topics which the editors believe constitutes the principal themes of the Christian vision of faith.
