Title: PATH OF DESCENT, THE - DISC 2 of 4 - (Includes CD 52284 to CD 52284)
The series based on the CD set Path of Descent is designed for small groups to explore and share their understanding and experience of what Fr. Richard Rohr calls "The language of descent" - the "theme of themes" of the Bible. This eight 25-minute session series is on 4 DVDs. Call it powerlessness, the bias from the bottom, the way of the cross or vulnerability, human beings have to be taught how to win by losing. Life itself is a series of necessary losses. Religion has tended to prefer the way of "ascent", attainment, which is much more to the liking of the human ego, even though it always defeats us. The Jewish prophets and self critical thinking are represented most fully in Jesus, who was a consummate Jew. Jesus tries to train his disciples in a path of descent and ego stripping instead of ego attainment. Stoic and Promethean language is what most of us have been trained in, instead of the downward mobility of true transformation. Heroic language ends up condemning us. Heroes show us who we are not, whereas true helpers show us who we are. Thus, Jesus tells us to love more rather than to idealize anything except God. The central theme of the fourth CD is the doctrine of the Cross. It is in suffering and mystery of contradictions, our own and the world's, that we move to consciousness and holiness. Disc 2 includes Session 3 and Session 4. 60 minutes
