Title: STORY OF THE GROTTO OF THE REDEMPTION: A PROMISED FULFILLED, THE
Located in West Bend Iowa, this grotto is the collective life work of three men: Father Paul Dobberstein, Father Louis Greving, and Mr. Matt Serinsee. As a new pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul parish of 35 families, Fr. Dobberstein recognized the need for a school and in 1899 filled this need. It was not until 1912 that Father fulfilled his promise to the Virgin Mary to erect an outdoor grotto. Precious stones and rocks from all over the country would soon arrive by truck and railroad. In 1946 Fr. Louis Greving was assigned as assistant and continued to work on the grotto until his retirement in 1994. Deacon Gerald Streit was appointed the director that same year. It is estimated that over six million pilgrims and tourists have visited this magnificent sight. It is the story of the redemption told in stone.
