Title: SCRIPTURE FROM SCRATCH: UNIT 2: OVERVIEW OF THE OLD TESTAMENT
This program presents contemporary Catholic scholarship in a clear, easy-to-follow and non-threatening manner. Disc 1 of 2 includes: Session 1 Will the Real Adam and Eve Please Stand Up? This session discusses whether God can speak to us through myths and legends as easily as through histories and prophecies. It introduces ways in which the early traditions combined to form the Scriptures we know today and shows why Catholicism and some other Christian traditions do not take the fundamental approach. Session 2: Tribes and Territories/Kings and Conquests. This session whizzes through the mountaintop events of Israelite history, explaining the difference between histories and historical accounts. The events described in the Bible's historical books are essential for understanding later happenings, including those in the New Testament. Disc 2 of 2 includes: Session 3: A Profile Look at the Prophets. This session traces the history of prophecy in Israel, distinguishing cult prophecy from those who experienced a personal call, from minor prophets, writing prophets from those who left nary a written word. It shows Jesus as the fulfillment of all prophecy and his own prophetic role. Session 4: 'Psalm' of the Writings. This session introduces the audience to those remaining books of the Hebrew Scriptures which are an assortment of literary forms and writing styles. Much of this presentation is devoted to the beauty of the psalms.
