Title: ADVENT: PREPARING FOR CHRIST, CYCLE B
Advent: Preparing For Christ, Cycle B is a four week Scripture Study program which includes one DVD featuring Fr. Mitch Pacwa, S.J. and a Study Guide by Cindy Morales. The Lesson titles include: Week I - The readings emphasize several themes such as the people of God waiting and yearning for the return of the Lord. The second theme is trust. That trust is strengthened by grace, God's very life in our souls. Finally, it is imperative that we keep alert, for we do not know when the time will come. Week II - The readings focus on the announcement of John the Baptist: "One mightier than I is coming after me." He comes to prepare the Jews for the arrival of the Messiah. Preparation requires them to repent of their sins and to graphically demonstrate their repentance through the ritual of Baptism. Our response to the readings should be to remain watchful and alert, to increase in holiness and to live out our baptism in service and evangelization. Week III - Each reading today points to the coming of the Messiah and the joy that accompanies the expectation of his imminent arrival. Isaiah rejoices in the new reality that will make justice spring up before all the nations. Paul exhorts his readers to pray without ceasing and remain "blameless" for the coming of the Lord. The Gospel presents John's account of the Baptist's announcement of the Messiah. Week IV - In the Lucan Gospel reading this year we hear the story of the Annunciation. The first reading from 2 Samuel 7 introduces a radical new theology to Israel that will eventually lead to the development of an expectation of the Messiah. Paul, in his final doxology of Romans refers to the fulfillment of salvation history through Jesus Christ and our response as the "obedience of faith." Each weekly lesson includes an Introduction; three Scripture readings; Points to Ponder, Tying It All Together; Catechism Connections; Rome to Home; Study Questions; Voices of the Saints; and ends with Questions for Reflection. "Suggested Responses" are located in the back of the Guide. The season of Advent begins the Church liturgical year. It is a time when the Church asks us to stop what we are doing and reassess where we are spiritually. Through the Advent Liturgy, and especially the Advent readings, the Church invites us to examine the path we are on, to perhaps redirect our focus: if our lives are not Christ centered, now is the time to get back on track. While this study will follow the Catholic Scripture Study format, it will be a little different, because we are going to look at the Advent Sunday lectionary readings instead of a particular book. To prepare for the session, you are encouraged to use the ancient method of Lectio Divina.
